Now i didn't install the software but, can i personally be held liable for the pirated copies of software on my machines?Obviosly you should work diligently toward compliance, but your coree question is can you be help personally liable, and the answer to that is most likely no. Unless you are an officer of the company, the company is liable, not you personally. I would definitely get them legitimized as soon as possible. If anyone asks, show a list of the cost compared to the price of the fines. Just for some info and numbers: I was talked to at the beginning of my career here that under no circumstances was I to allow any type of non-licensed software on any computer here, or pirated software used for any projects for work done at home.
There have been some tests along the road but I have stuck to my guns. If you bought a single license, it goes on one computer; no ifs, ands, buts, or substitutions. It's not my fault you didn't check with me first about the software's EULA before you plunked down $400 and found out only one person can use it and you can't return it now since you opened the package. I have ran into the same issue with a previous company I was at.Send emails to management stating the software is unlicensed and you will need to get licenses for that software. Send quotes of prices.

Do not do anything without writing and save all emails with that information.Without those emails I would have had alot of issues as I was the only one working in the department at the time.Auditors came in and I was able to prove that I didnt install the software, management was aware of illegal software and didnt want to make any changes.needless to say they got hit with heafty fines and had to shut down production for 3 days till they were fully licensed and auditors double checked. I would have to check with him if there is any chance of getting into trouble for just knowing.Just curious, who audited you and what kinds on fines was there? Was there a specific reason they decided to audit you? That's always the case when there is a crime. A company cannot legally ask you to do anything illegal and if you do it is your responsibility to not break the law. You have to tell the company know and if they force the issue you have to sue them.
It is a form of extortion to threaten someone with loss of income if they don't commit criminal acts for you. Step one document non compliancestep two look for legal advice free or cheap in your area canada has probono law and othersstep three contact your vendors make them awarestep four tell your employerThis way you know your rights and the laws and the vendors know to go after the company and not you. I had an employer who I had evidence piracy had gone on for nearly 10 years!.He knew the previous guy was a pirate and after months of telling them I had brought in antipiracy materials from microsoft I had no choice but to inform the police and microsoft and another company. The employer turned around and tried to blame me the trial for that and other things is next month.I found a list of 54 server 2003 keys in an environment with 2 servers.no technet maps or msdn subscriptions and most of the keys did not even workcontacted line of business vendor for support they said software was illegal and 'must be uninstalled' forwareded to management and was ignored.that lob app was from 2000-2007 and he failed to pay the vendor the nearly $9 thousand a year during that fime.and the kicker no cals for either terminal server + consumer licensed office. Walked into a similar situation a few years ago. The person who installed all the cracked copies of software was in the mindset of simply saving the company money.
He wasn't on some vendetta against having to pay for software or any of the typical lame excuses pirates use. He simply thought he was helping the company out in his own ignorant way. It took us months and tens of thousands of dollars to get everything legit. Lucky for us an audit came a year after everything was fixed. It's the lax mindset that's been bred into people today that causes all these problems.
Simply illegally downloading music is brushed off as nothing. It's illegal no matter what you think it is or isn't. I do not pirate music. I used to like everyone else. I have family and friends in various positions in the recording industry (my father-in-law owns a professional recording studio and I myself have been involved in music) and after seriously thinking about pirating music I stopped. My truck is a little low on gas. I'm just gonna siphon some of yours. You won't mind.
You'll have plenty left to get to the gas station and get more. If you have told them of the license infringement and they have no interest in rectifying the situation then it is obvious that they don't care about you or their own business. They are putting you (and everyone else at the company) in a bad position at no fault of your own. If I were you I would make sure to give them every opportunity to rectify the situation and if they don't then you need to look out for #1.Want a million dollars?BTW don't tell them that you will report them or they will probably fix the software licenses out of fear and then fire you.
I just reported someone to the BSA that installed Office 2007 Enterprise on one of my users pc that connects to our network. They own the pc's so it's not company owned but with pirated software on a pc that is attached to our network via VPN devices our company would be held responsible. I'm not looking to get a reward but it would be nice if a check came my way. I just know it's the right thing to do and that's why I would report anyone with pirated software. If you use it at your home no biggie.
Putting on a corporate pc is when it becomes a problem.
